So, I wasn’t planning on posting about this; but at the same time, to not write about it wouldn’t be just or feel right either.

I woke up early in the morning on Saturday, the 11th of January 2020. My social media was flooded with images of him. It took me a minute to understand and realize what was happening. Still in disbelief, however, I quickly opened the Times of Oman to confirm the news, and there it was - the obituary. I have no words to vividly describe that feeling of numbness, or the shocking surrealistic atmosphere; which unfolded in the light of what had just happened. Why was I sad? He didn’t know who I was; he’s not a relative or a friend. So, why do I feel like I’ve lost a family member?

The more images, tributes and messages shared online, the more the reality of it kicks in, unfortunately. Watching his funeral live on TV was even more heartbreaking. His funeral was just as simple as he was, reflecting his humble nature. Indeed, it was a very sad and doleful day for the people of Oman.

You see, I grew up in Oman. I am not Omani, but Oman is my home. Calling Oman my home (like many non-Omanis do) wouldn’t be possible, if it wasn’t for him. He built and made Oman the country and the nation that it is today. He established Oman’s place on the map, improved it throughout the years and even opened it to the world. He was a friend to all and enemy to none. He was the symbol of peace. He was truly a humble leader, loved by all.

In the following days, officials from different countries paid their respects and conveyed their deepest condolences. This only further depicts just how much he was loved, and sincerely respected around the world.

Death is inevitable, yet it will always be overwhelming for the deceased’s loved ones. May your soul rest in peace your Majesty Sultan Qaboos. You have made a huge impact on our lives and shall forever be in our hearts.

The same day also showed the smoothest transition of power to His Majesty Sultan Haitham. May his reign be peaceful and prosperous as he leads Oman into the future.

PS: Shout out to Chrysel for letting me use her artwork and to Tarek for helping edit this post. Thanks guys! ❤
